Sensory Biology: How Female Treefrogs Pick Mates at a Noisy Party
نویسنده
چکیده
A recent study has found that, despite strong acoustic masking from background noise, female treefrogs are able to select among individual males advertising for mates by taking advantage of small, periodic decreases in the overall noise structure.

How to Pick the Right One: Investigating Tradeoffs among Female Mate Choice Strategies in Treefrogs
Two main theories of female mate choice, that females either pick the best from the n closest males (best-of-n) or the closest with some minimum quality (min-threshold), make different behavioral predictions in some cases, yet both are supported by biological data. We present a computational agent-based model that is well-suited for investigating the differences between the two strategies for t...
متن کاملFemale gray treefrogs, Hyla versicolor, are responsive to visual stimuli but unselective of stimulus characteristics.
The visual ecology of nocturnal anurans is poorly understood, but there is growing evidence that vision plays a role in important behaviors such as mate choice. While several recent studies have demonstrated that females are responsive to visual cues when selecting mates, the forces responsible for these preferences are unknown. We investigated the responsiveness of female gray treefrogs, Hyla ...
متن کاملFrogs Exploit Statistical Regularities in Noisy Acoustic Scenes to Solve Cocktail-Party-like Problems
Noise is a ubiquitous source of errors in all forms of communication [1]. Noise-induced errors in speech communication, for example, make it difficult for humans to converse in noisy social settings, a challenge aptly named the "cocktail party problem" [2]. Many nonhuman animals also communicate acoustically in noisy social groups and thus face biologically analogous problems [3]. However, we k...
متن کاملThe cocktail party problem
Natural auditory environments, be they cocktail parties or rain forests, contain many things that concurrently make sounds. The cocktail party problem is the task of hearing a sound of interest, often a speech signal, in this sort of complex auditory setting (Figure 1). The problem is intrinsically quite difficult, and there has been longstanding interest in how humans manage to solve it. The p...
متن کاملOr47b plays a role in Drosophila males' preference for younger mates
Reproductive behaviour is important for animals to keep their species existing on Earth. A key question is how to generate more and healthier progenies by choosing optimal mates. In Drosophila melanogaster, males use multiple sensory cues, including vision, olfaction and gustation, to achieve reproductive success. These sensory inputs are important, yet not all these different modalities are si...
